Remediation Practice
EDSG's Remediation Practice focuses on reducing overall project cost and schedule using innovative applications of information technology. EDSG automates environmental remediation systems, develops new data collection tools, and implements Remediation Management Information Systems (RMIS). We also provide the full range of remediation services, including Site Assessments, Remedial Investigations, Feasibility Studies, and Remedial Design. EDSG's efficient and streamlined approach toward collecting, evaluating and managing remediation information accelerates site cleanup and closure.
Integrated Remediation Optimization Strategies (iROS)
Beginning with an understanding that every site has its unique set of clean-up goals and budgetary challenges, EDSG uses a 4-step integrated remediation optimization strategy (iROS) to design a site-specific optimization:
-
Document current remediation deployment (beginning or existing site conditions, remediation system, hardware, data)
-
Identify remediation information needed
-
Based on the issues identified and the information needed, identify remediation automation opportunities
-
Specify technologies to fill gaps (data and equipment)
iROS results in a summary of issues, recommendations, and solutions to improve remediation system performance. While each solution is unique, recommendations tend to include modifying equipment performance, optimizing data collection, eliminating data input redundancy and bottlenecks, improving workflow, and automating site processes. EDSG is product and technology neutral – we evaluate and recommend the most appropriate combination of technologies for a site - specific solution.

- Remediation Process Optimization (RPO)
- For sites with a long-term O&M program, a Remediation Process Optimization (RPO) is recommended every 5 years to determine if the remediation process is truly driving the site toward closure. Many remediation systems lose their initial effectiveness after several years of operation, and the rate of cleanup slows dramatically or even stalls, while O&M costs increase. The RPO team is comprised of experts in various areas of remediation relevant to the specific site. The RPO team reviews site operations, site data, and reports, and makes recommendations to improve the treatment process and site operations. Well organized, reliable data is essential to an effective RPO.
Remediation Management Information System (RMIS)
Any large remediation project requires data management. EDSG, a leader in applying EHS IT solutions, provides a Remediation Management Information System (RMIS) that turns data into meaningful information. While the actual interface and output reports are customized for each client, typically all project data – boring logs, monitoring data, analytical data, well pumping data, treatment system data – can be stored in one user-friendly system that is organized, categorized, reliable and available. Additionally, the data query engine tabulates the requested data over the requested time period. Regulatory and compliance notifications are automatically emailed to the responsible persons;
action item lists can be generated based on real-time data. Budget and schedule are tracked. RMIS can also generate
tables and graphics , customized to the needs of the user, to communicate project progress and success.
Continuous Fluid Level Monitoring System (CFLMS) (US patent pending)
EDSG developed the Continuous Fluid Level Monitoring System (CFLMS) to automate measurement and reporting the depth to water and depth to non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) in recovery and monitoring wells. When integrated into an RMIS, CFLMS can automatically control extraction pump operation based on the real-time measurements of NAPL and water levels in a well. Since the project team can read real-time depth to product and depth to water measurement in each well equipped with CFLMS, 100+ wells can be assessed in less than an hour to identify which wells need attention that day. The field crew can then spend its time optimizing and troubleshooting to maximize recovery, rather than on monitoring to determine which wells are recovering. The result is maximized NAPL recovery, since each well is continually optimized.
